New Year Leftovers? Here’s what you can do with them 🍾

New Year Leftovers? Here’s what you can do with them 🍾

The festive season - a time to be merry and bright, and eat everything in sight. We all end up with some leftovers after this festive season because most of us have, as the Maltese saying goes, “ghajnejna ikbar minn zaqqna” (our eyes bigger than our bellies). We cook - or order - more than our stomachs can handle because we all plan to start our diets as from the first of January (yeah, right). 🤫

You might be wondering what you can do with all your New Year’s Day leftovers. So here’s a short guide to help you out with anything you may have left sitting around:

Leftover chocolate

I’ve met very few people who have leftover chocolate after Christmastime. BUT, if you do have leftovers, you can make a delicious, fudgy brownie or a killer milkshake by mixing them with some milk and ice cream. If you’d rather have a warm drink, make hot chocolate at home by adding warm milk to your chocolates. You can also opt for a mocha drink and melt your chocolates with your coffee! ☕

Leftover alcohol

Unless you plan to have a solo party at home during this pandemic, there are a bunch of things you can do with leftover alcohol. Add a shot to your coffee or mix Baileys with Benna’s Caramel Toffee milkshake (we know you froze some of their limited batches) and warm it up. You can also make desserts and add a dash of alcohol, like a shot of brandy in your custard, a dash of rum in your pecan pie, or a splash of whiskey in your tiramisu. Or just place the bottles in your cupboard for your next celebration. 🍾

Leftover meat

My favourite thing to do with leftover meat is to chop it up, cook it with a sauce, and add it to pasta. You can also make stew or a sauce-based dish, like an Asian dish. If you’re a F.R.I.E.N.D.S fan, you definitely know what to do with leftover turkey: Ross’ Thanksgiving Leftover Turkey Sandwich, with the famous Moist Maker - an extra slice of gravy-soaked bread in the middle of the sandwich. Check out this recipe for this sandwich, which you can make with all your leftovers! 🥪

Leftover biscuits

Leftover biscuits are the best kind of leftovers - don’t throw them away! They’re great as a cheesecake or pie base (lemon cheesecake and banoffee pie come to mind). You can also make coconut balls (or substitute the coconut with anything you like), a post-Christmas Christmas log, or the famous Mama’s cake, using alternating layers of coffee-soaked biscuits and a mixture of Nutella and Nestle cream. 🥧

Leftover jams or sauces

Both jams and sauces can be added to curries for a good boost of flavour. However, you can also make a sweet pie or a sweet and sour dish using your leftover jam. Use your leftover sauce to make a savoury pie or add it to a baked veggie dish for an extra kick. 🍲

If it’s panettone that you have leftover, check out a whole bunch of ideas using panettone here or make Joelle’s panettone pudding. Whether it’s because you want to be sustainable or you just loved the food so much that you want to keep eating it, there’s no need to throw away leftovers!
