Panettone: friend or foe? These quick hacks might change your mind πŸ€”

Panettone: friend or foe? These quick hacks might change your mind πŸ€”

Panettone is a staple at Christmas time in Malta, but apparently the large majority of folks don't seem to actually like it. But I can't seem to get enough of the stuff, and here's why:

Panettone is boring, I get that. I also get that it is delicious. But so are a lot of things until you jazz them up. ✨

Panettone doesn't have to be just a giant cake your friends and family pass around each year as a way of dodging thoughtful present buying. It's a brioche, technically, so super sweet. But also super versatile. These are just a few ways I like to make use of leftover panettone

πŸ₯‡ Panettone French Toast

Because panettone is an airy cake, it makes it very absorbent. You can literally slice as thick a chunk of it as you fancy and dip it into your French toast mixture of choice to fry up the day after Christmas and thank me later. πŸ€—

Serving suggestion is definitely a mixture of eggs, heavy cream, nutmeg and vanilla. Top with syrup or honey and put the panettone-haters to shame.

Side-note: panettone also makes great pudding. You heard it here first. 😘

πŸ₯ˆ Panettone Toasties

Similarly to the French toast but less messy, slather your preference of a wedge with Nutella or any nut butter of your choice and top off as you would any other sandwich.

But the real beauty of a plain panettone loaf comes when you pair it with savoury foods. Fill two slices with your favourite breakfast foods and never look back.

Whack the bad-boy into your panini press, frying pan or toastie mould and get ready for a heavenly treat. 😍

πŸ₯‰ Grilled Panettone Stack

Now, you'll begin to notice that most of the items on this list are within the same vein of each other. We'll put that down to panettone being a very fatty bread in baking terms.

And where you find fat you will find flavour. Toast or grill a few slices as they are and stack them up as high as your hunger will allow. Drizzle over some jam and/or honey and some mascarpone and you've got yourself one killer breakfast. 😎

But panettone doesn't always have to be the centrepiece, either.

You can always toast a few slices of panettone and serve them with at your next dinner party alongside the cheeseboard. πŸ§€

You can even slice them into fingers and prepare a dipping sauce (or three, we won't judge). Caramel pairs perfectly with chocolate or plain panettone, for the fruit-filled variety (and everyone's least favourite, of course) you can always cook up a quick compote and make use of the frozen fruit you bought at the beginning of the year for your "smoothies". πŸ‘€
