Your Ultimate Guide to The Different Types of Sushi 🍣

Have you ever been to a sushi place and wondered what everything on the menu means? There are so many different types of sushi, and if you don’t know what they are, you’ll end up ordering from photos, just because “it looks nice”. 👀

There are a number of spots for sushi in Malta and some of our favs can be found here. However, if you want to get a better understanding of some sushi terms, you’ve come to the right place. Let’s go! 😍

Sashimi

I like to think of this kind of sushi as “level 1” because it feels like it’s where all sushi starts: raw fish. Sashimi is just raw fish alone, without rice. The simplicity of sashimi is what makes it delicious because you can really taste the fish in all its glory. 🤤

Nigiri

This would be a level up from sashimi, not in terms of taste, but because nigiri is technically sashimi + rice. This kind of sushi is made up of rice with a slice of fish on top, so the simplicity of nigiri also allows you to taste the fish as a ‘main’ ingredient. 🐟

Maki

This type of sushi is probably the simplest and most common form of sushi roll. Maki is basically fish surrounded by rice and wrapped in a nori sheet. To put it simply, it’s the one with the black sheet (nori) on the outside. Another version of maki is the hosomaki, which translates to “thin roll”. 👌

Do you like sushi?

Uramaki

Or just think of it as maki inside out. Uramaki is just like maki, but the rice is on the outside and the nori sheet is on the inside. This type of sushi is usually a bit fancier, too. It’s not just rice, fish and nori, but it comes with various toppings, fillings and even sauces. 🍣

The Salmon Avocado roll from Wasabi Sushi Express at The Plaza Food Hall is a delicious type of Uramaki. 😋

Temaki

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of temaki is ‘sushi wrap’ and that’s how I remember what it is. Temaki is a nori sheet shaped into a cone and filled with rice, fish and sometimes even vegetables. 🥑

Chirashi

This dish is kind of a mix between sashimi and nigiri. Chirashi in Japanese means ‘scattered’, and in this dish, raw fish slices are scattered on top of rice mixed with vinegar. Some garnishes like pickled ginger or wasabi can also be added. 🤩
