Vegetarian and Vegan-Friendly Spots to check out this Summer 🥬

Vegetarian and Vegan-Friendly Spots to check out this Summer 🥬

In the past years we’ve been seeing a lot more representation and awareness for veganism in Malta, and with it new tasty spots to grab vegan meals. Veganism is a lifestyle that involves abstaining from the use of animal products, whereas vegetarianism means not eating meat, fish or poultry. 🥩

Are you a vegetarian or vegan?

Consuming less animal products is widely known to be of benefit to one’s health as well as to the environment; so even if veganism isn’t for you, it wouldn’t hurt to participate in the occasional ‘meatless Monday’ or indulge in a vegan meal every now and then. We gave you a list of vegan-friendly spots for Veganuary, but we thought we might top it up (and remind you of some must-visits) for the summer months ahead. ☀️

So here are 10 places in Malta and Gozo you absolutely must check out for a fantastic vegan meal. ➡️

Pastarella

This iconic food truck rolled into the tax-Xbiex Marina area just a year ago, and it’s been serving up fresh homemade pasta (egg-based or vegan), salads, burgers, sandwiches, and desserts, all with vegetarian and vegan options. Their La Vita Sana burger with a beyond meat patty and their avocado pesto are definitely must-trys. 😋

Alive bistro (Gozo)

At this Marsalforn location you can expect to find vegetarian and vegan soul food and homemade desserts. The folks at Alive Bistro are all about health conscious and sustainable eats and offer interesting picks like organic wines and kombucha. This place is super creative and fairly new, so it defo deserves a spot on this list. 🤔

Olive3

Run (don’t walk) to this breakfast and lunch spot in Birkirkara - their menu is to die for and has vegan options for whatever you’re craving. If you head to Olive3 in the morning, opt for their vegan full English or decadent smoothie bowl. For lunch, try out the Yes Ve Gan poke bowl or Vurger vegan burger. We’re loving the food selection as well as the cheeky menu item names. 🤣

Ġugar

Ġugar is a quaint bar like no other; it’s a spot you can head to for an afternoon coffee break and a book (that you can get from their library), check out some local artwork, or grab drinks with friends and listen to some tunes. The best part is that this place is super vegetarian and vegan-friendly, serving up the usual bar snacks, salads and sandos but veggie-centred. 🥗

Green sushi

Opening its doors just last year, Green sushi is the only vegan sushi place on the island, making rolls with super creative ingredients and flavour combos. Their weekly homemade vegan desserts are to die for, and their sushi sets won’t run you penniless compared to usual sushi prices. You can tell these guys put a lot of passion into their food, as well as into being sustainable and caring for the environment in every way they can. 🌎❤️

Po-k

For those who don’t know, poke is a Hawaiian dish that involves super healthy, fresh and delicious veggies, protein, sauces and toppings on a bed of grains or salad, making it the perfect dish for vegetarians, vegans, or pretty much anyone (plus it’s super fun to eat). At Po-k, you can opt for tofu, tempeh or avocado instead of meat as your protein and enjoy a bowl of guilt-free goodness. 🍲

Soul Food

This place has been around for a while, but it would be a sin not to give it a shout out. Soul Food is your location for vegetarian and vegan dishes in the capital with Italian inspiration.

These guys are all about nourishment and balance, with healthy meals that are still super delicious. From buddha bowls to burgers to salads and smoothies, they’ve got something for everyone. 😋

Oakberry

We are absolutely obsessed with these naturally vegan açai bowls and smoothies - they’re so good that they feel like a sin! Oakberry is a Brazillian concept that uses açai pulp as a base and lets you add on all the tasty toppings that your heart desires; one of which is Munch A Bunch homemade peanut butter, and you know we’re all about supporting local (vegan) businesses. 🔥

The Crumbox (Gozo)

Rarely does one find platters and grazing boxes that are vegan friendly, so The Crumbox really hit the nail on its head with their selection of vegan cheeses and deli. They also have super cute vegan dessert boxes such as donuts and cannoli, so you can finish off with something sweet. Their 4 most popular platters can all be veganised, making them perfect to share with vegan and non-vegan friends alike. 🤗

Balance Bowl

At Balance Bowl, don’t expect to find boring vegan dishes and sad salads; they’ve got a super creative and delicious selection of eats packed with protein and healthy fats. This spot has been around for 3 years, and as the first spot to open in Malta with a fully vegan menu, it’s a must-visit. They also offer a gluten-free plant-based meal plan, perfect for anyone trying to start a healthier and more sustainable diet. 🌱

Bonus: New Spot Alert!

Noble Cafe Bistro in Victoria, Gozo is whipping up decadent dishes in a chill yet classy interior with presentation that will make you feel at home and at a high end bistro all at once. Their menu includes lots of vegetarian and vegan options such as their super sexy protein-packed buddha bowl, chickpea and beetroot burger, and vegetarian English breakfast. 🤤
