The Maltese Doughnut Scene: Are you team traditional or team modern? 🍩

The Maltese Doughnut Scene: Are you team traditional or team modern? 🍩

Doughnuts (or donuts, if you will) are an iconic part of our island’s culture, specifically our food culture, with the likes of pastizzi, imqaret, rabbit, and more. What makes doughnuts a unique part of this list is that they’re a food eaten all around the world, with every culture having their own doughy variations. The traditional Maltese doughnut is therefore overlooked due to the fact that you can find doughnuts pretty much anywhere; but that doesn’t make it any less special to us. There’s nothing quite better than a fresh, jam-filled and sugar-sprinkled doughnut on a Sunday afternoon picnic. ☀️

Are you team chocolate or jelly jam?

Along with the traditional doughnuts that we all know and love, recent years have seen several new doughnut ventures spring up in the Maltese foodie scene.

Those brave enough to try, have taken something so close to our hearts and given it a modern twist, matching up to the doughnut trends currently taking the internet by storm.

Whilst those who are loyal to the doughnuts they grew up loving might not be such a fan of over-the-top, sugary Americanised doughnuts, I think it’s always great to remain a contender in the international doughnut scene, evolve with the times and try new things. 😎

Let’s take a look into the two doughnut eras of the Maltese islands ➡️

Traditional

One of the most popular spots for our beloved doughnuts is Tad-Doughnuts in Fgura. You almost can’t resist stopping the car and buying a box of four whenever you drive past. When it comes to Maltese doughnuts you know it’s all about a proper base: a fluffy, fried ball of goodness. Whether plain and simple, iced, covered in chocolate or filled with custard, you’re sure to find something to please everybody. The Fgura joint also offers free delivery on orders over €10, so you can be extra lazy with your box of doughnuts! 🚚

We all were pleasantly surprised when the iconic Tad-Doughnuts in Qormi opened up an Instagram page last year. Social media is a critical part of keeping up with the times and competing with all the new doughnut spots. Speaking of keeping up, they’ve also added some awesome new flavours in the past year that don’t limit them to the old jam, chocolate, and cream - a personal favourite is Snickers 🥜 (peep the top right corner of the picture).

We also can’t forget the iconic doughnut vans that pop up across the island, making us drool with just a few words on his loudspeaker. 📢 There’s other local spots for getting traditional doughnuts of course, but we’ll move on to the 🆕 kids on the block...

Modern

The Donut Factory has been around for a while now, and was the first contender in the modern donut game. These folks stick more to the American style donuts (it’s in the name, too) and they’ve clearly stolen some hearts seeing as they’ve opened 5 locations across the island, and even offer delivery through WOLT and Bolt Food. 😮

Zwiit Cravings Cafe made a splash when it opened a few years back, not only because of their unique donuts, but their dessert scene in general - waffles, churros, pancakes and more. They’ve got a huge range of filling and topping options, and were the first to bring the letter donut trend to Malta; the super cute and tasty gift that everyone loves. You don't even need to get off the sofa, order through Bolt Food or WOLT... whatever tickles your fancy! 🎁

This recently revamped spot on the Valletta Waterfront brought their own take on the doughnut with their innovative style. Bentley’s created the Bronut - a brownie in a donut, with all the eatery’s style intact. With flavours like Kinder Bueno cheesecake, it’s no wonder everybody is drooling over these bronuts. Oh, yeah bro, did you know you could get your WOLT on and get theses creative treats delivered. 🤤

What's your pick?

The newest donut in town definitely gained a huge amount of hype on their socials, and it’s easy to see why - those donuts look crazy good, and you can snatch them up on Bolt Food too. Donut Empire have totally changed the game with their outrageous toppings and flavours. They also had a food challenge with their giant donut, something we definitely want to see more of in the Maltese foodie scene. 😏

You can't quite mention the new doughnut scene without giving Crust a shoutout... their dough is proper and their fillings are so creative, it's hard to choose just one flavour. So don't choose... just get them all, WOLT Crust's doughnuts your way and dive right in! 🔥

And if the Bronut made the cut... we can't see why Manouche's Cronut would be excluded from the list, the perfect croissant-doughnut crossbreed that is mighty, mighty fine! 🍩 + 🥐 = 🤤

Never tried a Cronut? You're missing out, get WOLT-ing, order through Manouche's website, and just try it... really... you have to! 💣

We’re pretty hungry after that doughnut tour… we just might order a box ourselves. If you're new to the WOLT game, drop the FOODBLOG5 code in your order to get a €5 discount.😋

What’s your preference when it comes to doughnuts? Will you always go for the classic you grew up with, or do you prefer the modern and trendy styles? What’s certain is that both deserve their merit, and both would go great with a warm cuppa at tea time. ☕
