The perfect sides to your holiday season meal 🤩

The perfect sides to your holiday season meal 🤩

Tired of the usual potatoes and vegetables as sides to your special meal? Holiday season is here, so we thought we would give you some ideas for delicious sides to your dish! If you’re making lunch or dinner this holiday season instead of eating out at a restaurant in Malta, check these side options out. ✌️

Honey glazed carrots

These guys are super! Whether you want to cut your regular carrots into smaller, equally sized strips or use small carrots instead, it’s up to you. However, all you need to do is place the carrots in a dish, season with salt, pepper, a dash of cumin and a dash of paprika, and add a drizzle of honey (or agave syrup to make it vegan) on top. Bake in the oven and enjoy! 🥕

Smashed brussel sprouts

Brussel sprouts might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the secret to making them crispy and delicious is to smash them! First, boil them just for a few minutes, then place them on a baking tray and smash them with the bottom of a glass. 💪

Season with salt, pepper and some garlic powder and drizzle with olive oil and bake them in the oven until crispy! If you want them even more delicious and crispy, dip them into grated parmesan after you smash them (and before you bake them). Super good! 🤩

Mashed sweet potatoes

Forget about regular mashed potatoes; mashed sweet potatoes are a game-changer! Cut the sweet potatoes into small cubes and boil them. Once done, drain and season with salt and pepper. Mash them until smooth (you can add a bit of butter to make them extra creamy) and add some crispy bacon bits if you like! 🍠

Do you prefer cooking at home or dining out for the holidays?

Parmesan twists

Shaped like fries, but better. Head over to your closest supermarket and get yourself some pre-rolled puff pastry (you’ll need an even number of sheets). Mix a good handful of grated parmesan cheese with an egg, salt, pepper and some oregano. 😋

Brush one sheet of the pastry with that mixture and then place the other sheet on top of it. Cut the pastry into strips, twist them and bake until beautifully golden brown and crispy! 😍

Crispy roast potatoes with guanciale

This might be one of the ‘usual’ side dishes, but everyone loves roast potatoes. Plus, if you’re still not happy with the result of your roast potatoes, here’s a tip. Add a good glug of olive oil to the dish you will be roasting your potatoes in and place that in the oven (without the potatoes) so that it heats up nicely. Adding your cubed potatoes to hot oil will make sure they come out nice and crispy. Season with salt, pepper and some rosemary and bake until golden brown. 😏

If you want some extra flavour, heat up a pan and cook a bit of guanciale in the hot pan (let the fat render). Once the potatoes are ready, mix in the guanciale and a bit of the fat and enjoy! You can also grate a bit of parmesan over the potatoes for extra deliciousness. 🤤

Cauliflower cheese

Here’s a vegetarian side option! Cauliflower cheese is a delicious, creamy, comforting side dish that is loved by almost everyone. You can either lightly boil the cauliflower before roasting it in the oven, or just skip the boiling part and place the chopped cauliflower in a dish with a killer cheese sauce and bake until golden brown. This recipe is a must-try! 👌
