The viral DIY Hot Chocolate Bombs making waves for Xmas 2020 🎄

I’m sure you’ve seen them doing the rounds by now - homemade hot chocolate bombs seem to be the foodie DIY trend of 2020. Let’s take a look at the viral trend and a beginner’s guide to making them for yourself! ☕️

Hold up - what exactly are these Hot Chocolate Bombs?!

They’re usually homemade hollow spheres of milk chocolate, formed in a mould, which are then filled with hot chocolate powder or cocoa, marshmallows, and whatever else you can think up. Seal the bomb, place in a hot mug of milk and watch the chocolate melt releasing the indulgent centre and stir to enjoy a decadent cup of joy! 🤤

How can I make Hot Chocolate Bombs?

It might sound complicated but in actual fact this is quite a simple DIY activity - perfect for spending an hour or so winding down after Christmas shopping, or keeping some little ones entertained. 🤔

The FoodBlog Hot Chocolate Bomb Guide

To make your own hot chocolate bombs you will need:

  • Chocolate (good quality is best - Lindt is an excellent choice)
  • Baking mould - half circle shaped
  • Hot chocolate mix
  • Marshmallows

1. Firstly, melt your chocolate in the microwave, keeping an eye on it and giving it a stir here and there to keep it melting evenly and smoothly. 🍫

2. Fill the moulds with the chocolate using the back of a spoon or spatula.Pro tip: don’t make the chocolate too thin - make it thick enough so it doesn’t collapse or snap before it hits the hot milk!

3. Pop the moulds into the freezer for 10 minutes, during which time the chocolate will set. Remove the chocolate half-spheres from their moulds.

4. Next, microwave a plate and use it to melt the edges of the half-spheres. This will allow you to seal the sphere halves once you’ve filled them. 😋

5. Fill one half of each sphere with the hot chocolate mix and some marshmallows. Push the two sides of the sphere together sealing to form a chocolate bomb!

Hot Chocolate Bombs: the finishing touch

Melt some white chocolate and drizzle over the bombs, add sprinkles, crushed candy canes… get creative, there are no rules here! These could also make a great gift as they keep well in an airtight container or cellophane bag.
