UNESCO’s List of World Cultural Heritage includes the Maltese Ftira! 🍞

UNESCO’s List of World Cultural Heritage includes the Maltese Ftira! 🍞

We always knew the Maltese ftira was special, but this just confirms it. This local taste-bud-fest has now been added to UNESCO’s List of World Cultural Heritage. 🎉

This all started from a petition to have the Maltese ftira added to the list of World Cultural Heritage last year. Fast forward to a few months later, this petition was signed by hundreds of people, the local government decided to submit their proposal to UNESCO, and we now have confirmation that this local delicacy, alongside the traditional Maltese festa, have been accepted as part of the list! 🙌

UNESCO’s list aims to protect items of cultural value and promote their significance to a particular culture. So having our local ftira on this list is simply stellar. Let’s face it, have you ever seen something like the Maltese ftira anywhere else in the world? Ciabattas may be similar, but a ftira is far superior. 🤩

Do you agree with the ftira joining the World Cultural Heritage list?

What makes the Maltese ftira so special? To start with, it dates back to hundreds of years ago when the working community of Malta struggled to make ends meet and they had to make do with the little resources they had. This means that even while struggling, the Maltese people still managed to make one of the best snacks on the island that has survived over the years. The crunch on the outside, the cloud-like texture on the inside, and the awesome combination of Mediterranean ingredients that strike the perfect balance of flavours make the ftira a true definition of the Maltese culture. 🥯
