Michelin News: Two New Maltese Restaurants Given a Michelin Star ⭐

It’s finally here! The Michelin Guide Malta 2021 has finally come out and two new Maltese restaurants have been awarded a Michelin star! Bahia and ION – The Harbour are the two new restaurants boasting the Michelin star. The total of Maltese restaurants with a Michelin star is now up to 5, including Noni, De Mondion, and Under Grain. 🤩

Bahia - Lija

This gorgeous restaurant is situated in the heart of Lija, a quaint town in the central area of Malta. Bahia is named after the orange that is key to the people of Lija - the Bahia orange. The building is actually a restored townhouse that is over 200 years old. 🏠

The Head Chef is the talented Tyrone Mizzi, who brings a super flavourful experience to Bahia. The menu is not fixed, but it changes according to what’s in season. The Michelin Guide team had some great stuff to say about the food at Bahia: 👌

The seemingly simple-looking dishes belie the thought that has gone into them and come with complementary combinations and a wonderful depth of flavour.

ION - The Harbour

Located in our beautiful capital city, ION - The Harbour provides an experience like no other. This restaurant is situated within Iniala Harbour House, a luxurious hotel, so dining here is accompanied with gorgeous views of the harbour. 😍

The restaurant itself is not super formal and the food is exceptionally made. The menu is characterised by seasonal ingredients provided by local farmers and fishermen. Head Chef Andrew Borg seemed to have impressed the folks at Michelin. Here’s what they had to say: 😏

“...it’s rightly the food which is the jewel in this restaurant’s crown and the skilfully prepared dishes are a joy to eat.”

Do you agree with Michelin’s choices?

More Restaurants added to the Michelin ‘Plates’

Apart from these two restaurants, another 5 local spots have been added to the Michelin ‘Plates’, which means that customers who dine there will find menus with fresh ingredients that are made with great skill. 😋

These new restaurants are Zest, Mezzodi, The Fork and Cork, Chophouse, and Fernandõ Gastrotheque. There are already another three local restaurants on this list: Rubino, Terrone, and Commando. 👨‍🍳

We want to congratulate all local restaurants who got a mention in this year’s Michelin Guide - stellar job folks! Have you ever visited these restaurants yourself? Let us know what your experience was in the comments below! 👇
