5 Ways you can celebrate Tortilla Chips on Tortilla Chip Day 🎉

Happy Tortilla Chip Day! Yes, it’s a thing, and since it involves food, we’ll celebrate it. We’ll celebrate anything food-related. Tortilla chips have been our friend ever since childhood; whether you’re craving a quick snack, you’re going to the movies, you’re watching a game, or you’re having friends over, tortilla chips are always involved in some way or another. 🤷

Here’s how you can incorporate tortilla chips in your recipes this Tortilla Chip Day:

Make them fresh

If you do not have tortilla chips in your cupboard, don’t worry, you can start by making your very own from scratch. Tortilla chips are basically tortillas that are cut into triangles and baked or fried. So if you have tortilla wraps, cut those up into triangles and put them in your oven, convection oven or fryer for a few minutes (depending on which method you’re using). 👩‍🍳

If you want to make the tortillas from scratch too, this recipe is super easy to follow.

Make nachos

The most obvious way to use tortilla chips is to make nachos. But there’s no reason for you to keep things boring with nachos. Spice up your dish by layering it up, adding different toppings in each layer, like salsa, cheese, jalapenos, pulled meat, and beans - caramelized onion and crispy bacon always works too. You can also add a Maltese touch by adding ground up, cooked Maltese sausage and pieces of peppered gbejna. 👌

If you’d rather head out, check out Avotaco, Hard Rock Cafe, or Bianca’s for some seriously good nachos.

Use them as a binder

If you’re out of breadcrumbs for your meatloaf, meatballs, or whatever recipe it is that requires breadcrumbs to bind your ingredients, you can use finely-ground up tortilla chips. You can even use them to bind your ingredients if you’re making fresh beef burgers or veggie burgers. 🍔

Make a nacho bake

Think of a nacho dish, but rather than not being cooked and served in a plate, it’s layered up in a dish and baked. Add layers of cheese and salsa, some veggies and maybe even a meaty element if you want to, and bake it in the oven, and voilà, a delicious, baked dish. If you’re adding meat, it would be ideal to cook the meat beforehand, since the tortilla chips will not need a lot of time to cook. ⌛

Use them as a crunchy topping

In the same way that we sometimes add fried onions or croutons as a crunchy topping to our dish, tortilla chips can also be used as a crunchy topping. Crush them into smaller pieces (not too small), and add them to your salad, baked veggie dish, soup, or even your mac and cheese. You’re welcome! 😋

Use them as a crust

My favourite way to use tortilla chips is to use them as a crust in a number of recipes. You can add them in your final step after coating your meat or vegetable with flour and eggs, and then bake or fry. Tortilla chips can be used as a crust when you’re making chicken nuggets, chicken burgers, chicken dippers, mozzarella sticks, veggie burgers, avocado fries, and so much more. 😍

Have you ever tried Bianca’s chicken burger? It’s crusted with crushed nachos, which is actually why it’s so deliciously crispy!
