5 International Food Joints that Malta deserves on its shores 🇲🇹
I'm just gonna come right out and say it: living in Malta means we miss out on some pretty sweet food spots. It's only recently that we welcomed the iconic coffee house Starbucks. But have you ever wondered what else is waiting out there for you?
Admittedly, my list isn't one of great travel. More one of great taste, and if you disagree… bye. 💅
We'll start with the one that always comes to mind when I ponder this very situation, almost daily.
🍨 Shakeaway
Shakeaway claim themselves to be the biggest name in milkshakes worldwide. They're not, though, clearly. Because they have yet to open up shop on our sunny shores. 👀
But their gimmick is a simple one: milkshakes, but customisable. Their stores are lined with shelves of candy, all waiting for you to blend together with a scoop of vanilla.
The possibilities would be endless, and they could even put a Maltese touch - offering imqaret or kwarezimal flavours when seasonal (or year-round 😏).
🥧 The Cornish Bakehouse
Don't get me wrong here, I do love a pastizz every now and then. And Sphinx's creations like the burger pie and mango rib are God-tier quick-bites.
How to describe The Cornish Bakehouse… hmm… OK.
Cast your minds back to the Summer of 2020 (too early? 😅), when Fat Louie's made their gourmet pastizzi stuffed with our favourite menu items and local ingredients?
Imagine that, but with a touch of Greggs. We all know Malta is well overdue a decent sausage roll, why not take go full throttle and actually line the shelves with real pasties while we're at it. 🙊
🍔 Sonic Drive-In
I can feel a lot of heat already, but hear me out: we already have one McDrive at the airport.
Doesn't a cute drive up to the Top of the World in Gharghur coupled with a drive-in-dining date and a classic Sonic Burger sound… perfect? 😍
And if we really can't stretch to accommodate a Sonic Drive-In, I will absolutely settle for a Five Guys. But that point alone would warrant its own debate.
🐥 Nando's
You know them, you love them and if you don't then you haven't lived.
Malta deserves peri-peri chicken and we also deserve it done well. And having your parents spread some Nando's sauce from Greens does not count. Where are our paper bagged birds and peri-peri chicken livers? 😤
🥛 A Cereal Café
There is no better surge of nostalgia than finding your childhood cereal on the supermarket shelves again. Cereal Cafés simplify the issue of buying an entire box of Froot Loops and only managing to get through one bowl because your palette has now… matured. 🤪
That, and they make for great Instagram hangover essentials!
All in all, Malta does offer up some good food. But what if the grass really is greener on the other side? 🤔
