The Smelliest Food In The World 🤢

The Smelliest Food In The World 🤢

Ever wondered which foods have the worst smell in the world? In this article, we’ll be exposing some of the stinkiest ingredients of them all - and let me tell you, they’re bad. Standing close to one of these foods below might just make you want to hold on to your face mask a tad longer. 😷

Iru

Iru, also known as Dawa Dawa, is a Nigerian seasoning made by fermenting locust beans. Although it ranks as one of the worst smelling foods in the world, it’s actually loved among many people in Nigeria. This is because, when cooked and blended, its stinky odour dies down and enriches a meal. It is used with lentils, soups, vegetables and rice primarily. 😶

SurstrĂśmming

Otherwise known as ‘sour herring’ in English, this awful smelling Swedish fish reeks so bad, that you have to open it under running water or outside to prevent the smell from filling a room. This fermented herring is extremely sour. It contains salt that prevents it from totally rotting. Needless to say, you have to be a brave soul to try this fish after smelling it. 😨

Durian

Do you like exotic fruit? If you don’t, I wouldn’t recommend getting anywhere close to durian anytime soon. This southeast Asian fruit’s smell is so pungent that food writer Richard Sterling commented that: “its odour is best described as… turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock”. In some airports in southeast Asia, there are some signs that warn passengers to refrain from carrying it with them on the plane! 🛑

Limburger Cheese

You can’t say you like smelly cheese unless you’ve tasted Limburger cheese. This cheese is made from the same bacteria that creates body odour, so I wouldn’t serve it to somebody who’s particularly sensitive to bad smells anytime soon.

Fun fact:

In Wisconsin, USA this cheese is loved by many - so much so that a bunch of shops are known to serve it in a sandwich with mustard and onions. 🧀

Century Egg

I’m sure we’ve all smelled a stinky egg that’s gone bad at least once, but this Century Egg will change your perspective about the entire matter. As it turns out, this egg is made by rolling it in clay, ash and salt and then by letting it sit for several months. While its odour is awful, its taste is actually not that bad, having been compared to ripe Camembert with a creamy texture. 🤔
