Shutdown Shots: Bars to visit during Santa Marija weekend 🎉

Shutdown Shots: Bars to visit during Santa Marija weekend 🎉

Santa Marija week is something we all look forward to desperately (because nobody likes working all day in 40-degree heat, understandably so), and no work in the AM means ample possibility to party all night. After spending your day at the beach, chilling at home watching Netflix, taking the boat out, or whatever it is you like to do on your summer hols; the perfect way to end it is an evening (and possibly early morning) out with your amigos. đŸ•ș

We all have different ways we like to let off steam, but whether you’re a non-stop clubber party extravaganza or a super chill person, everyone can agree that it’s fun to grab a drink at the bar. This activity caters to people of all tastes: whether pints of beer, aperitivos, shots, or fruity cocktails tickle your fancy. đŸč

What’s your pick?

So, without further ado, here are some bars where you can spend your shutdown weekend:

Thirsty Barber

This St Julian’s bar is super unique with its 1920s barber shop-inspired interior and vibes. It’s definitely a weekend drinking experience not to be missed, so what better time to try it out than in your time off? You surely won’t be disappointed with their list of hooch; from classic and timeless to crazy cocktail concoctions. The mixologists at the Thirsty Barber are pros - so don’t be shy to ask for something personalised or special. 🍾

The Dubliner Pub

What better place to go drinking than at an Irish Pub? The Dubliner in St Julians is a super cosy spot for a couple of pints, and the ambience here will make you feel at home. Drinks are a must this shutdown, but we strongly suggest using them to wash down some grub from their proper pub menu. Fancy some fish and chips, anyone? 🐟

Hole in the Wall

Located on High Street in Sliema, this cafe and bar is literally a hole in the wall - and whilst it goes unnoticed by many, it’s one of the city’s hidden gems as the oldest bar in Sliema. It’s not only an iconic spot for drinks but for culture too; being a hub for local and foreign talent in art, music and film. Stay updated on their page to check out what will be going on while you go for a drink or two (or three or four - heck, stay there all night). đŸ€·

Kennedy Bar

This contemporary gastro-pub is bringing life back to the capital, the way it was meant to be. Kennedy Bar’s tables line Strait Street so tightly you can barely walk by; which is a surprise to nobody - feel-good vibes, top tier platters, live music, and a fabulous atmosphere is exactly why this part of The Gut is such a popular evening location. ⭐

Hammett's Gastro Bar

Hammett’s Gastro Bar is an Asian fusion concept with a contemporary ambience, where you can get incredible signature drinks of both local and exotic inspiration, as well as a super tasty food menu to go with it. Unfortunately this place doesn’t take bookings; but we can guarantee that even on a busy night, it’s worth the wait to get a table or sit at the bar for some Japanese whiskey (note: not for the faint of heart). đŸ„ƒ

City of London Bar

This iconic bar is one of the oldest bars in Malta, and it can’t be a coincidence that it’s still popular today. City of London sits on the St Julian’s seafront opposite Balluta, and brings life to an otherwise quiet area whilst still maintaining a chill atmosphere. If you’re looking for a more relaxed spot to drink the weekend away, this is where you should be headed. đŸ»

GIN-ger

Located on the rooftop of the Hyatt Regency in St George’s Bay, this brand new restobar is definitely a must-visit. GIN-ger (as the name implies) boasts a killer gin selection, stunning cocktails and a sophisticated menu full of Asian flavours. It’s a gorgeous spot to get booze and views - kick back and watch the sun go down with a drink in hand. 😎 Check out our full review of this spot here!

Bonus: Maltese Band Clubs

If you can’t decide on a bar to go to and none of the above options tickle your fancy, you can never go wrong with a good old fashioned Kazin tal-Banda. The vibe is always fun, the drinks won’t break the bank, and most of them serve free Maltese nibbles to soak up all that booze - in our opinion, these spots are super underrated! At the end of the day, they’re a part of our culture; and having a drink or two to support them keeps that culture alive. đŸ‡ČđŸ‡č
