Poke Party: All you need to know about poke bowls 🤩

Poke Party: All you need to know about poke bowls 🤩

Poke bowls (pronounced poh-kay, by the way…) are probably one of my favourite meals ever. They’re refreshing, colourful, and they won’t leave you in a food coma after you eat them. Poke bowls can also be a life saver in summer when it’s so hot in Malta that you don’t feel like eating anything. 👀

But how did it start? Who invented it? Here’s all you need to know about poke bowls! 😎

Where it comes from

A poke bowl is a dish that was created in Hawaii by Japanese immigrants, giving it both Hawaiian and Japanese influences. In Hawaiian traditional cooking, the term ‘poke’ itself means “to cut into pieces”, so in this instance, it refers to the raw pieces of fish in the dish. 🐟

This means that for a bowl to be considered a poke bowl, it has to include pieces of raw fish (or at least a protein). If it doesn’t and it’s just a mix of rice and veggies, it is normally considered as a buddha bowl. ✌️

What makes it a poke bowl

Usually, a poke bowl also consists of a base, which is typically sushi rice, chopped vegetables, and toppings, like sesame seeds, furikake, and a sauce. The main element in a poke bowl is the raw fish (the ‘poke’ itself), and when this dish was first created, the most common fish that was used was fresh ahi tuna. 😍

Nowadays, poke bowls can be personalised according to whatever you like! You can have a different protein, like chicken, beef, or tofu, and you can add whichever vegetables you want. This is probably what makes poke bowls so great, because they have a balance of everything! 🥑
