Perfect Porridge 5 Ways: Wholesome Recipes for Winter ❄️

Perfect Porridge 5 Ways: Wholesome Recipes for Winter ❄️

You may have read our interview with Alex Alden, and you might have also developed this mysterious craving for porridge.

Now, the truth is that, the idea that porridge is yet another old lady’s boring breakfast, that should have been thrown out the window long ago. But with the right ingredients (and passion), you could turn that ancient meal your mother forced you to eat into a fun and yummy treat for the colder days. All you have to do is to try out a recipe or two I’ve listed below. Trust me, they don’t disappoint!

Peanut Butter & Banana Porridge

The food match made in heaven tastes amazing in the morning on a hot bowl of porridge. While your porridge is in the making, lightly coat a pan with a bit of coconut oil. Add in large chunks of banana and lightly heat them up to get out the fruit’s naturally sweet flavour. Sprinkle some cinnamon on top and add to your porridge bowl while mixing gently. Coat your thick porridge mixture with as much peanut butter as you want after plating. Dig in! 🍌

Purple Porridge

I can’t promise you no Instagram photos will be posted after the making of this meal. To start off, I recommend using coconut or almond milk for this recipe. You’ll want that extra sweet taste to balance out the main ingredient that’s going to give a succulent purple colour. This is, in fact, a handful of cherries! Create a delicious cherry sauce by warming them up in a pot and lightly crushing them - in no particular order whatsoever. Plate your plain porridge in a bowl and pour this cherry sauce on top, adding anything from coconut shavings to crushed almonds and chocolate chips. 💜

Porridge Tropicana

Summery fruit for a typical winter meal? Sounds interesting… If you’re not sure what to do with your leftover fruit you may or may not still have in your freezer, this recipe is a good way to go. Cut up some pineapple, peaches, mango or any other summery fruit of your choice and serve cold on top of your porridge bowl (the contrast in temperature tastes quite nice). Sprinkle some maple syrup and coconut shavings on top, you’ll love it! 🥥

Savoury Breakfast Porridge

A savoury porridge bowl?! It took me a while to wrap my head around this one, but I tried it and believe it or not, it actually tastes good! You’ll want to substitute your milk for water when making the porridge, while also adding some salt to taste. Add in some chia seeds and pumpkin seeds to make this meal more nutritious and slightly crunchy. Plate and add a boiled or fried egg as well as half an avocado. Sprinkle some sesame seeds or chilli flakes on top for that extra goodness. 🥓

Classic Scottish Porridge

The phrase ‘less is more’ is definitely fitting with this meal. Easy to make, minimal yet still filling. All you need to add is a little maple syrup on top of your warm porridge bowl. As tempting as the recipes above are, sometimes, all you need to be satisfied is to go back to basics with nothing more than a four-ingredient meal! 🥣
