It's cocktail season in Malta. Here are our top cocktail recipes 🍹

It’s summer, and that means it’s cocktail prime time. They are the perfect accompaniment to barbecues, house parties or gatherings. And they’re actually super easy to make at home! Here’s our top ten:

Mojito

This recipe usually calls for muddling mint leaves with 2 teaspoons of brown sugar at the bottom of a glass. If you’re not a cocktail connoisseur you probably don’t have a muddler, so use the handle end of a wooden spoon instead. Pour in an ounce and a half white rum and an ounce of lime juice, then top with soda water. 🍃

Spritz

A lighter cocktail that almost everyone enjoys, prepare a jug and place it at the center of the table as a crowd-pleaser. Equal parts Aperol and Prosecco with a splash of soda and you’re good to go. 😋

Martini

This drink is probably the most iconic yet most argued upon. The classic method calls for half an ounce of dry vermouth stirred with 2 and a half ounces of gin (au contrare to James Bond). To get a cold drink without shaking with ice, simply chill the glass beforehand. Garnish with a lemon twist or olives, your choice! 🫒

Pina Colada

For this tropical classic you’ll need one part coconut cream or full fat coconut milk, one part white rum and 3 parts pineapple juice. You can either add these to crushed ice and shake, or for a better consistency blend the mixture with ice. Garnish with a pineapple wedge and kick up your feet for the full experience. 🥥

Margarita

There are many variations to this widely loved drink, but the easiest is to go with 1 ounce triple sec or any other orange liquor and 1 and a half ounces tequila (2 if you’re feeling brave), add a squeeze of fresh lime. Prep the glass by rubbing a lime wedge across the rim and dipping it in salt and garnish with a slice of lime. 🍹

Long Island Iced Tea

The perfect way to get drunk at happy hour. Again you can find many variations to this popular cocktail, but for simplicity’s sake we’ll go with one part each (small doses!) of: light rum, dry gin, vodka, tequila, triple sec, syrup and lemon or lime juice. Shake it up and top with cola to taste, and finally garnish with a lemon slice. 🍋

Moscow Mule

Traditionally this is served in a copper cup to maintain the freshness of the drink. Pour out an ounce and a half of vodka and a splash of lime juice onto ice. Fill the rest of the cup with ginger ale, garnish with lime, sit back and enjoy. 🧉

Negroni

A popular Italian aperitif with a super simple ratio: an ounce each of Campari, gin and sweet vermouth. Serve up stirred, not shaken; over ice with a slice of orange to garnish. 🍊

Mimosa

This is a brunch must-have and it’s so easy. It’s just equal parts orange juice and champagne. Of course, you’ll get a way better flavour if it’s super fresh squeezed oranges instead of the packaged stuff. And if anyone judges you for getting tipsy before noon, that’s their problem. 🍾

Daiquiri

2 parts light rum to 1 part syrup and 1 part lime juice. The lime really comes through with this one and for sweetness cane sugar can be used instead of simple syrup. Best watch yourself with this one! 🤪

So, why not impress your friends and family with a pitcher of a drink they love? It’s happy hour somewhere in the world… 🥂
