Kid Chefs! 4 tips to get Kids Excited about Cooking! 🧒🏻

How much cooking time do you get with your kids? 🤔

Constantly having a hectic routine will surely start to make you consider new ways of spending time with your little ones. If you happen to have a hundred things on your day-to-day to do list, you may find doing chores with the children to be a great way of spending time with them (all while getting stuff done). 💯

We’re sure this dreamy thought has already entered your mind a couple of times - doesn’t it sound convenient? But how can you actually get your kids eager to help you around the house? Here is the answer: get them to cook. 🧑‍🍳

Being able to lure the kids into the kitchen not only allows them to spend their time doing something fun; it’ll also allow you to connect with them. With all this said, how can you start getting your kids excited about cooking? 🥄

Easy does it

You’ll find it to be in your favour to give your children the easier tasks in the kitchen. These may include any activities that don’t require the use of more complex appliances. Whisking up melted chocolate, mashing up bananas and cleaning cups are just some examples. Usually, these tasks are appropriate for children under the age of six or seven years old, depending on the child. It’s good to keep in mind that children tend to get bored with tasks that are too easy. Assign cooking tasks that make sense with their age and capabilities to make sure they’re challenged and at a good learning point. 🥣

Engage their senses

Part of the adventure of cooking food is discovering new smells, tastes and textures. Since kids are naturally curious and observant, they will absolutely love taking a bite out of new ingredients, smelling herbs, touching food before rinsing and more. This might even make those yucky fruits and veggies seem appealing! 🥕

Make them feel needed

What person, young or old, doesn’t like to feel needed? We know that kids love to feel involved in grownup stuff at home, especially when their parents trust them with the ‘difficult’ tasks. You can ask your kids to read recipes aloud for you or to test the taste of the food in the making process. Make a game out of it, call it Pick the Spice! This provides kids with the opportunity to be acknowledged, while also feeling helpful and accomplished. 🧂

The way to the heart: favourite foods

Another fantastic way of getting kids excited about helping out with making food is obvious as it is effective. Make their favourite meals! Children are intuitive and intelligent, making them quite likely to be interested in learning how to prepare what they love eating the most. Enabling your children to pick their favourite dishes that can become family regulars will make them happy in many ways. 🍝

Bottom line

The most important thing to remember is to make cooking fun for your kids while having fun yourself. You won’t always be able to predict what children like to do in their free time at home. However, being able to make them feel good about helping out with cooking food might even have them coming back for more the next time. 👍
