Hey Malta, serve these treats & snacks at your next tea party ☕

One thing that I absolutely love is afternoon tea. Apart from tea being my favourite warm beverage, the calm atmosphere that accompanies this ‘event’ is just something that I crave from time to time. But who am I kidding? My favourite thing about afternoon tea is obviously the food that comes with it. 🤷

If Miss Rona wasn’t about, we’d be planning tea parties for our family and friends, all before the sun starts to shine too bright - but there’s no excuse not to enjoy a FoodBlog-style high-tea on your own anyway! Here are some of the snacks and treats you can try out:

Ottini or Ottijiet

These traditional local biscuits are just the perfect tea-time snack. I grew up downing a dozen of them (or the fingers) with my tea. There was nothing elegant about the way I ate them, but they can be served elegantly on a side plate, or you can serve a small one on the saucer alongside the cup. You can also serve an assortment of biscuits - remember that box of biscuits that always ended up as a sewing kit when we were young? 🍪

Mini Sandwiches

Forget about your basic ham and cheese. Amp up your sandwich skills by serving a variety of sandwiches: tuna and cucumber, prawn and mayo, mozzarella with rucola and cherry tomatoes, cured ham and sauerkraut, egg and mayo, smoked salmon and cream cheese, roasted peppers with goat cheese and walnut, turkey ham and cranberry jam, chicken and honey mustard - just pick your favourites and you’re good to go! 🥪

But probably dreaming of that booking at The Corinthia for a glorious high tea - with restaurants open now, your tea-time problems are so last year. ☕

Quiche

Whether you make a large one and cut it into slices or make a lot of mini quiches is up to you. However, this creamy, soft, pie-like dish is a killer tea-time snack. Make your creamy filling using just milk, eggs, and cheese and then add your favourite ingredients, like bacon, ham, sausage, veggies, or crispy onions (or a mixture of all!). 🥓

Bagels

Bagels are the perfect bread for afternoon tea. The crunchy exterior and the soft interior are the perfect balance for your taste buds. My favourite fillings are chicken and mango chutney, smoked salmon and cream cheese or hummus and cucumbers. 🥯

Treat yourself to the most divine bagels on our little rock, Grano will explore your tastebuds and blow your mind! 🤯

Mini Tarts

The elegance that comes with afternoon tea calls for everything to be in miniature form, so mini tarts are a must. These can be great both as savoury and as sweet treats. For the sweet ones, go for shredded chicken with herbs and tomatoes, spinach and mushroom, or ricotta and crispy bacon bits. As for the sweet, you can opt for lemon curd, chocolate and peanuts or whipped cream and strawberries. 🍓

Flapjacks

Not the sweetest sweet treat you’ll find, so if you don’t have a sweet tooth, this will be great for you. The main ingredients are oats, butter, brown sugar and golden syrup, but you can even add dried fruits or nuts if you want to. Go nuts! 🐿️

Scones

What’s afternoon tea without scones? Nothing! These babies are the ultimate tea-time snack. Serve them with your favourite jam (strawberry, raspberry or blueberry are great with scones), add clotted cream and you’ll feel like a true Brit! 👑

Fresh Croissants

Whether you want to make these sweet or savoury is your choice (ham and cheese croissants are becoming increasingly popular!). However, my favourite will always be the sweet ones. You can either make them fresh at home or buy the frozen ones. Serve chocolate spread and jam on the side so your guests (aka, you and your cat) can fill their croissants with whatever they wish! 🥐

If you want to get the goods home Dolci Peccati are the croissant or cornetto gods living their baked goods fantasy! You’re welcome! 🤤

Cakes

Afternoon tea is not the same without a sweet treat to end the afternoon. Two popular cakes for tea time are the Victoria Sponge, a soft, fluffy sponge with a thick layer of cream and strawberry jam in the middle, and the Lemon Drizzle cake, a denser cake with a kick of citrus. But my favourite will always be the rich, chocolatey, velvety Devil’s Food Cake! 🍰

Cupcakes and Muffins

Since this event calls for everything mini, you cannot forget ‘mini cakes’. Cupcakes and muffins can be served alongside cakes, or else as an alternative. Go for classic vanilla or a rich chocolatey flavour. If you want to step up your game a little, you can also try savoury muffins with veggies or cheese. 🧁
