FoodBlog’s Around the World Series: Europe in 6 dishes 🇪🇺

We bet your travel bug is really kicking in right about now, with the Covid-19 pandemic hopefully dwindling away soon, travel plans could be in our near future… but till then FoodBlog’s Around the World Series will keep you hungry the way we know best… with food, food and a whole lot more food. Here’s Part 4 of the series… happy dreaming! 💯

Travel is a medicine for the soul and the mind. It helps you discover new cultures and different cuisines. The rest of Europe seems so close, yet so far right now, right? Well we want to give you all you can get until we can board those planes again, so hop on this culinary plane for a trip around Europe: 🧑‍✈️

Poland 🇵🇱

Rich history, beautiful scenery, and exquisite dishes, Poland is full of things that your heart desires. Often, Polish cuisine incorporates bread, sausages, sauerkraut, gherkins and sour cream. If you’ve been to Poland, you know all about pierogi. 🥟

Pierogi are basically little bites of heaven. They are traditional Polish dumplings that can be sweet or savoury. Savoury pierogi typically include a filling made of cheese and potatoes, meat or sauerkraut. The sweet ones are usually filled with fresh blueberries and served with a sprinkle of icing sugar. 🤤

Italy 🇮🇹

Italians are very proud of their culture, especially their cuisine, and rightly so. Italian food can basically be described as comfort food with flair and style. Everyone around the world knows that you cannot mess with an Italian’s carbs, because pizza and pasta are their top two dishes. 🍝

Pizza margherita is Italy’s favourite pizza and what makes it stand out from any other country’s pizza is the use of fresh local products for everything - the dough, the sauce, the basil and the mozzarella. They also add the most special ingredient: love. 🍕

The Netherlands 🇳🇱

The Dutch definitely know how to have fun and eat well. You can find typical Dutch snacks around every corner in Amsterdam. Dutch cuisine most often contains a lot of carbohydrates, whether it’s a stroopwafel, poffertjes, bitterballen, kroket or their famous frites. 😋

The stroopwafel is probably the most famous sweet Dutch snack. It is a very thin waffle with a soft yet crunchy texture. The stroopwafel is baked whole and then sliced from the middle, where a sweet syrup (stroop) is placed. Although you can buy these from any supermarket in the Netherlands, fresh is always best. 🧇

Serbia 🇷🇸

This country has a very unique culture that is characterised by passion and unity among its people. And what better way to bring people together than through good food? There are a number of delicious typical Serbian dishes, like the cvarci, kobasice, sarma, and cevapcici, which is probably the most popular. 🤤

Cevapcici is basically minced meat that is grilled in the form of a sausage, and served in somun or lopinja (flat bread). Recipes vary across families, but they are a favourite amongst locals and tourists alike. 🐽

England 🇬🇧

The first dish that comes to mind when someone mentions England is probably fish and chips. But that is not the only meal that this country adores. 🐟

An all-time English favourite is bangers and mash. This meal consists of sausages served over a bed of mashed potatoes and peas - covered in gravy. This is one of the typical English comfort foods that you can find in any English bar. 🍺

Romania 🇷🇴

The people of Romania are known to love their meat, so most of their traditional dishes are a unique bundle of superb flavours that include meat. Typical Romanian dishes are pomana porcului, mici, jumări and the most popular of all, sarmale. 🍖

Sarmale are cabbage rolls made of fermented cabbage leaves stuffed with spiced minced meat, onions and rice. The rolls are then boiled in a special sauce for a few hours. This Romanian comfort food can be found all around Romania. 🥬

Of course, we couldn’t list every European country (unfortunately), so this is just a brief overview. Do you want to discover more European dishes? What’s your favourite dish from your country and from your travels? Check out the rest of FoodBlog’s Around the World Series: Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 - but be warned, you will grow exceedingly hungry (and maybe book a few flights… for when it’s safe to travel again). 🌎
